Built on a foundation of students, educators and parents working together, Discovery Community School offers an intimate community of learners. Guided by a highly experienced and innovative staff, DCS meets district curriculum requirements with programs that build on individual strengths and abilities. Students in grades 1-6 consistently work at their own levels of academic readiness, and are always encouraged to reach for new challenges.
Established in 1994, Discovery is located on the Carl Sandburg Elementary School campus north of Kirkland. DCS students have access to Sandburg’s library, computer lab, music and science programs, and physical education specialists.
Classroom activities integrate a variety of subjects using learning themes and “hands-on” techniques (visual or audio book reports, math manipulatives and frequent use of creative and functional writing to enhance learning).
Discovery Community School offers you the opportunity to be highly involved in your child’s education within the public school system. The program’s success depends on the shared commitment of 65 volunteer hours annually from each family in the DCS community.
There are many ways to be a part of your child’s education at DCS. Parents can volunteer in the classroom; support the school outside the classroom by organizing field trips, community service or fundraising; or serve in parent leadership positions. In addition, parents and staff attend monthly Community Group meetings to resolve school issues and get to know one another.
